The Klondike Letters Project

As mentioned in a previous post, I'll be spending some time in Alaska this summer. As Artist-in-Residence, I will be collecting postcards from hikers on the trail and turning them into short animated films. Each postcard will have a message written by a hiker to his or her future self and will be mailed to the writer one year later. When we translate our experiences through a physical, creative act we solidify our memories of the journey, not only on paper, but in the neurological connections in our brains as well. The emotions and resolutions we experience so strongly in a wilderness setting, fade once we return to our daily routines. The postcard, when it is recieved a year later, thus becomes a 2 dimensional portal into a 3-dimensional memory.

A beach full of shells is an inspiring place, even on a gray and rainy afternoon. Nothing like a bit of plein air animation to spice up a romantic walk. Mr. Parks double as tripod and remote trigger for me. The whole thing took about 7 minutes to film. If it was a brilliant, warm sunny day, this piece might have been a bit longer.
